DVV International has been active in Mali since 2008. Since 2012, the regional office of DVV International West Africa has been located in the capital Bamako.
The formal education system in Mali has been significantly weakened over many years. The illiteracy rate among adults is correspondingly high (more than 70% on average). In addition, resource poverty, a large inequality in the distribution of wealth and income as well as violent conflicts (especially in the north of the country) hinder the economic development of the country and cause an extreme lack of jobs and prospects. In this context, DVV International and its partners in Mali are strengthening non-formal and demand-oriented educational opportunities at the local level in order to provide young people and adults with access to learning opportunities and thus to active participation in social and economic life.
